Interesting discussion with coaldustcanary about writing and the craft and a number of things related to the noticeably different style in recent stuff (really noticeable in most stuff after Memories of Summer Rain[0][1], with the occasional peaks of Heavy Metal Law and Angel in Aspic). Definitely something to work up into something worth posting, but now my mind's fried.

Plus there was more I wanted to ask her and she vanished. Either a power cut or her cable's fucked. Arse.

[0]: On that note, I really wish I'd not put Memories in the same setting as Contact. There's a whole mess of reasons for that, which I will likely explain in a followup.
[1]: The writing index is saving me from direct links. For now at least.

To hackers the recent contraction in civil liberties seems especially ominous. That must also mystify outsiders. Why should we care especially about civil liberties? Why programmers, more than dentists or salesmen or landscapers?

This is why hackers worry. The government spying on people doesn't literally make programmers write worse code. It just leads eventually to a world in which bad ideas will win. And because this is so important to hackers, they're especially sensitive to it. They can sense totalitarianism approaching from a distance, as animals can sense an approaching thunderstorm.

On Writing

Two thousand words on writing. Not a story, but a slightly more academic approach to something I've noticed in my own work. Behind a cut because it's not a story.
