That One Glorious Moment

$BOSS: "This is our plan of attack."
Me: "Looks like a nail..."
$BOSS: "Wha-? Oh, very funny. How long have you been waiting to say that?"
Me: "Err..." *counts on fingers* "Ten, maybe eleven years?"

Is this the hammer thing, or a quote from somewhere?

"the hammer thing"?

It's one of the oldest jokes on earth.

The thing about the oldest jokes on Earth is that I seemed to have missed hearing most of them.

"The hammer thing" is "every problem looks like a nail when all you've got is a hammer."

A tack is a type of cut nail, commonly used to hold light pieces of wood together.

A plan can refer to a technical drawing as well as a detailed description of how something is to be done.

Hence the confusion between "plan of attack" and "schematic of a nail".

Schematic of a Nail. Now there's a hard-metal band to go alongside The Smell of Hammers. Admittedly, they'd be the System of a Down to Smell's Nine Inch Nails, but what can any of us do?

And with regrds to your hammer thing: When all you have is a Leatherman, every problem looks Leathermanipuable.
